Across a 30-year career, I have balanced a visual fascination with organic forms and the behavior of light with the hard-edged realities of budgets, planning constraints, and site construction. The Technical Foundation: 20 Years in Fashion & Textile Print
My career began with a deep immersion in high-end composition, scale, and color chemistry. For two decades, I translated complex organic textures, asymmetric botanical details, and shifting natural forms into original hand-printed patterns for haute couture and leading fashion houses in London, Bath, and New York. This era was a rigorous masterclass in precision layout execution and material science, teaching me how a two-dimensional design reacts when placed across fluid, physical dimensions.
Navigating Complex Architectural Commissions
Wanting to push these organic patterns into permanent, three-dimensional spaces, I scaled my practice upward by founding an architectural metalwork firm. For over twenty years, I manufactured large-scale structural installations and custom metal screens designed to serve as functional filters for natural light and shifting shadows.
This work required intense problem-solving within strict real-world boundaries. I regularly delivered complex public art and private commissions that had to appease multiple stakeholding bodies, navigate rigid local planning constraints, and satisfy demanding legal safety standards. This ability to manage creative friction and physical execution culminated in the co-design and complete project management of my family's timber-frame home. A self-build is the ultimate lesson in structural compromise and compliance. My challenge was to map out a bright living space oriented around the solar path, while simultaneously managing raw material supply lines, controlling strict cash flow, and coordinating on-site trades—from framing contractors to plumbers and electricians—all under the scrutiny of UK building regulations.
